چکیده
The 1989 Nobel Prize in chemistry has been awarded to Sidney Altrnan and Thomas R. Cech for their discovery that RNA in living cells can function not onfy as a molecule of heredity, but also as a biocatalyst. A brief historical overview of the laureates’ work is presented, and citation data for their most-cited publications are examined. Research-front analysis highlights both scientists’ centrafit y to the field of RNA enzymology studies. The effect of the finding of RNA catafysis on originof-iife theories is also covered.

1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Sidney
Thomas Cech shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Sidney Altman (Enzymatic cleavage of RNA by RNA. Biosci. Rep. 10:317–337, 1990). That year we also published the lectures by the winners of the Physiology or Medicine prize: Harold E Varmus (Retroviruses and oncogenes I. Biosci. Rep. 10:413–430, 1990) and J Michael Bishop (Retroviruses and oncogenes II. Biosci. Rep. 10:473–491, 1990) an...

To hear Tom Cech tell it, he came by his prodigious success — Nobel Prize at 41, presidency of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) this year at 52 — thanks to lots of help from his friends. His 1982 discovery that RNA could behave like an enzyme and splice itself led to the 1989 Nobel in chemistry, which he shared with Sidney Altman. But he says he stumbled into the RNA World — then a sm...

I have a dream. I have been hooked on it ever since 25 years ago when I prepared for my German diploma exam by reading a chapter in Lubert Stryer’s Biochemistry textbook about catalytic RNAs, or ribozymes. Around this time the journal RNA was born as a manifestation of a growing RNA field and society. My PhD mentor Manfred Eigen organized regular winter seminars in Klosters, Switzerland; hearin...

A living cell requires thousands of different chemical reactions to utilize energy, move, grow, respond to external stimuli and reproduce itself. While these reactions take place spontaneously, they rarely proceed at a rate fast enough for life. Enzymes, biological catalysts found in all cells, greatly accelerate the rates of these chemical reactions and impart on them extraordinary specificity...

Over the past 200 years, there have been countless groundbreaking discoveries in biology and medicine at Yale University. However, one particularly noteworthy discovery with profoundly important and broad consequences happened here in just the past two decades. In 2009, Thomas Steitz, the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for "st...
